Jointly run by School of Business and Management, School of Engineering and School of Science, the program draws expertise from timely areas such as information technology, blockchain, data science, machine learning and decision analytics.

 

The program provides students with fundamental knowledge and important skills relating to popular financial technologies and their engineering and financial principles, thereby enhancing their market competitiveness in the booming FinTech field.

 

On successful completion of the program, graduates will be able to:

 

  1. Conduct an analysis of the engineering mechanisms of various financial technologies;
  2. Identify and analyze the financial principles of various financial technologies;
  3. Formulate and analyze FinTech-related problems arising in practice;
  4. Apply engineering methodologies and quantitative techniques to solve FinTech-related problems;
  5. Perform theoretical or practical FinTech tasks qualitatively and quantitatively; and
  6. Investigate limitations in traditional financial services and propose potential FinTech solutions.
  1. Minimum Credit Requirement

30 credits

 

  1. Credit Transfer

Subject to the approval of the Program Director and the University regulations governing credit transfer, students entering via the regular pathway can transfer a maximum of 6 credits to the program. Students entering via the Dual Degree 4+1 Pathway (BScRMBI+MScFinTech) can transfer a maximum of 14 credits to the program.

Subject to the decision of the Program Director, promising students who do not have a strong mathematics background may be required to take MFIT 5006 on top of the graduation requirement of 30 credits.

 

MFIT 5012

 

Students are required to attend at least six enrichment activities recognized by the program to complete MFIT 5012 as part of the graduation requirement.

 

  1. Elective Courses

    14 Credits

    A list of electives offered in a particular year will be announced at the beginning of each academic year. The elective courses are a selection of FinTech courses chosen from the portfolio of the School of Engineering (SENG), School of Business and Management (SBM), and School of Science (SSCI). Students have to take at least one elective course from each of SENG, SBM and SSCI.
     

  1. Remarks

Part-time students may take a maximum of 9 credits in each term.

To qualify for admission, applicants must meet all of the following requirements. Admission is selective and meeting these minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.
 

1. General Admission Requirements of the University
  • Applicants seeking admission to a master's degree program should have obtained a bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution, or an approved equivalent qualification.

2. English Language Admission Requirements

Applicants have to fulfill English Language requirements with one of the following proficiency attainments:

  • TOEFL-iBT: 80*

  • TOEFL-pBT: 550

  • TOEFL-Revised paper-delivered test: 60 (total scores for Reading, Listening and Writing sections)

  • IELTS (Academic Module): Overall score: 6.5 and All sub-score: 5.5

* refers to the total score in one single attempt


Applicants are not required to present TOEFL or IELTS score if

  • their first language is English, or

  • they obtained the bachelor's degree (or equivalent) from an institution where the medium of instruction was English.

3. Additional Information
  • Applicants preferably should have programming and mathematics background.
  • Applicants are highly recommended to have a satisfactory GMAT or GRE score.
  • For full-time applicants, no minimum work experience is required. However, any relevant work or business experience will add weight to the application under consideration.
  • For part-time applicants, at least two years of full-time post-qualification work experience is highly recommended.

 

Dual Degree 4+1 Pathway (BScRMBI+MScFinTech)

  • Only for BSc in Risk Management and Business Intelligence (RMBI) students in Year 3 or above (for cohorts admitted from 2019/20 onwards) who do not opt for the FinTech Option in BSc(RMBI), and meet the following selection criteria:
    • CGA: 3.3 or above
    • Completed at least 100 UG credits, including transferred credits
  • Successful applicants will receive a conditional offer for admission to MSc(FinTech) and need to pay a deposit at the prevailing deposit rate.
  • They will be allowed to start taking MSc(FinTech) courses in their final year of undergraduate study, and will enter the MSc(FinTech) Program upon successful completion of the BSc(RMBI) degree.
  • Upon entering MSc(FinTech), they can transfer up to 14 surplus MSc(FinTech) credits taken during the undergraduate study to fulfill the MSc(FinTech) program requirements. They will pay tuition fee for the remaining credits on a pro-rata basis, with a minimum payment for 18 credits.
