New students admitted with credit transfer and PGD graduates subsequently admitted to the MSc Program are also required to pay the full program fee.

The program fee covers 2 terms of study for the full-time PGD Program, 3 terms for the part-time PGD Program, 4 terms for the full-time MSc Program, and 6 terms for the part-time MSc Program. Students who stay in the program beyond the normative study period covered by the program fee, or take additional courses or need to retake any courses are required to pay additional fee.

In Hong Kong, as in other densely-populated cities, environmental issues such as the deterioration of air and water quality, and increased constraints on solid waste management, have posed great challenges to environmental engineers.

The Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) and Master of Science (MSc) Programs in Environmental Engineering and Management seek to meet the needs of practicing engineers who may be engaged in the design, commissioning and management of environmental facilities and infrastructure systems.

The programs are designed for those who wish to strengthen their environmental engineering knowledge and to well prepare themselves for advanced engineering practices with management responsibilities. The programs not only offer advanced environmental engineering and management courses for students but also enable them to take several electives from other related programs.

On successful completion of the program, graduates will be able to:

  1. Describe basic and advanced knowledge in environmental engineering and management;
  2. Identify environmental problems and propose feasible environmental engineering or management solutions;
  3. Illustrate contemporary environmental issues with the awareness of the environmental impacts;
  4. Design basic environmental engineering components and systems; and
  5. Analyze major factors impacting environmental engineering systems and provide strategies for managing these.
  1. Minimum Credit Requirement

    PGD: 15 credits
    MSc: 30 credits 
     

  2. Credit Transfer  

    Subject to the approval of the Program Director and the University regulations governing credit transfer, a maximum of 6 credits can be transferred to the PGD Program and a maximum of 9 credits can be transferred to the MSc Program.

  1. Elective Courses

A pre-approved elective course list, including JEVE 6980, will be made available to students at the beginning of every term.

Subject to the recommendation from the Program Director and approval of the course instructor, PGD students may take a maximum of 3 credits and MSc students may take a maximum of 6 credits of CIVL courses at 4000-level to meet the graduation requirements of the programs.

 

  1. Remarks

  • PGD students are required to take at least two management-related courses, and MSc students are required to take at least three management-related courses.

  • Part-time PGD and MSc students may take a maximum of 9 credits in each term.

  • Students failing to meet the graduation grade average (GGA) requirement of 2.850 or above are required to repeat or take additional course(s) even if they attain passing grades for all courses.

To qualify for admission, applicants must meet all of the following requirements. Admission is selective and meeting these minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.
 

1. General Admission Requirements of the University
  • Applicants seeking admission to a master's degree or postgraduate diploma program should have obtained a bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution, or an approved equivalent qualification.

2. English Language Admission Requirements

Applicants have to fulfill English Language requirements with one of the following proficiency attainments:

  • TOEFL-iBT: 80*

  • TOEFL-pBT: 550

  • TOEFL-Revised paper-delivered test: 60 (total scores for Reading, Listening and Writing sections)

  • IELTS (Academic Module): Overall score: 6.5 and All sub-score: 5.5

* refers to the total score in one single attempt


Applicants are not required to present TOEFL or IELTS score if

  • their first language is English, or

  • they obtained the bachelor's degree (or equivalent) from an institution where the medium of instruction was English.

3. Program-Specific Admission Requirements
  • A bachelor’s degree with second class honors in Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related area
