- MTLE 5010Design Methodologies[3-0-1:3]DescriptionThis course will begin with an introduction to design as a systematic process. The students will be introduced to the historic design movements and their features, including traditional, modernist, art deco, Bauhaus, contemporary, postmodern, etc. The connection between various design aesthetics to modern product design will be explored. Several elements of form and function will be introduced with their importance in industrial design. Finally, techniques and considerations for customer oriented design processes will be introduced with examples from systems as well as products. This part will also cover user experience.Intended Learning Outcomes

- MTLE 5110Product Development and Prototyping[2-1-1:3]DescriptionThis is a project-based course that emphasizes the self-learning approach to engineering problem solving. The students will be given a design brief to rapidly produce a prototype. This is followed by a deeper analysis of the specification non-conformance, with students using self-learning guided by the instructor(s) to re-design and produce an engineering prototype.Intended Learning Outcomes

- 1.Produce a testing prototype based on design specifications.
- 2.Analyze failure modes for a product prototype.
- 3.Apply background engineering/ analytical skills to guide product design.
- 4.Produce an engineering prototype and test it for performance.
- 5.Use computing tools for detailed engineering analysis.
- MTLE 5810Startup Workshop[1-2-0:3]DescriptionThis is a practical course designed to expose students to the practical issues in launching a startup together with case studies of several startups to gather some insight into root causes for success and failures. The case studies will be covered in open format lectures, while the practical topics will be covered via workshops. Topics covered in the workshop will be focused on the Hong Kong (HK) and Pearl River Delta (PRD) region with coverage of local laws, regulations, agencies and organizations. - 1.Analyze a startup business to identify potential risks and opportunities.
- 2.Identify unique/novel elements of an idea/product based on patent searches.
- 3.Register a company in HK/PRD area.
- 4.Execute operational details related to setting up a start-up, including banking, personnel, accounting and tax.
- 5.Articulate the various government and non-government support structures in HK and PRD area for a given area-focused startup.
- MTLE 6980Technology Leadership and Entrepreneurship Project[9 credits]DescriptionThis 3-term project course is the hallmark of the MSc Program in Technology Leadership and Entrepreneurship. The students will be expected to brainstorm, prototype, and launch an alpha release of a product or a service over the duration of the course. In the first term, students will engage in early stage brainstorming, ideation, team-forming, product contest, pitches, including participation in case competition. In the second term, each team will go through a sustained and concentrated effort in prototype building and complete an alpha-release, or engineering prototype of their product which is launch-ready in the third term.Intended Learning Outcomes

- 1.Identify a market need.
- 2.Create a multi-functional team and clearly define member roles.
- 3.Investigate existing IP data and differentiate a product from pre-existing ones.
- 4.Create initial prototype and mock-up.
- 5.Identify and learn background foundations for a new product.
- 6.Analyze and perform detailed design of sub-components of a design.
- 7.Perform experiment analysis and failure mode analysis on prototypes and components.
- 8.Produce engineering prototype and identify downstream avenues for product launch.
