- GBUS 2030From Zero to Exit – Journey of A Start-up2 Credit(s)DescriptionThis course is designed for students who are interested in starting a business or working for an entrepreneurial company. Students are expected to understand the opportunities and challenges of a start-up journey, from coming up with their own start up idea to incepting the idea, pitching for funding and to growing their own start-up. At the end of the course, they will be equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to kick start their business as an entrepreneur. In this course, students will work with organizations (e.g., non-governmental organizations (NGO) or small and medium enterprise (SME)) to explore ESG initiatives and strategies. This course takes an experiential learning approach that allows students to apply their business knowledge and skill in helping organizations address pressing ESG needs so as to generate value and effect positive changes. This approach to strategy innovation distinguishes between the conventional cutthroat way most companies compete based on price and product features, known as the red ocean, and a new way of competing that emphasizes finding new markets that are free of competition – blue oceans. The course equips students with a set of highly practical tools that can be used in any organization both to develop strategic innovation and then to implement this change successfully. - GBUS 3040Business and ESG Management for Asia and Emerging Markets3 Credit(s)DescriptionThis course intends to develop a deep understanding of the contextual factors of Asia and emerging market countries, with a specific emphasis on the risks, challenges, and mitigants to doing business in these countries. In studying key business, political, economic, social, financial, and cultural characteristics of these countries, students will recognize regional differences and learn to develop relevant business strategies. Students will also explore how country differences impact business strategies and managerial decision-making. Analyzing cases studies of different types of real business deals, the course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive overview of doing business in these regions and the opportunity to strategize as corporate decision makers through discussions, role plays, and presentations. The objective is to sharpen students' capabilities in deal structuring, financing, negotiating, and deal closing from a strategic management perspective. The styles of important value investors including Graham and Buffett will be introduced and discussed. The basic techniques of investing will also be presented: search, valuation and the construction of a portfolio. The framework developed will be adopted in class to study specific companies.
